Alexander McQueen Number 13 prosthetic legs
Our obsession continues with the Savage Beauty articles. After this seasons fashion weeks. We saw so much beauty and originality, but so much had been done before, by the great Alexander McQueen himself. We might even soon have to create a column for all these incredible pieces.
This incredible ensemble comes from the Spring Summer 1999 collection. Yes there is a beautiful brown leather corset, yes a delicate silk skirt. But the most important garment, if you can call it that, is the prosthetic legs.
McQueen made this for Olympic Athlete Aimee Mullins who walked the runway. At the time the attendees thought they were boots peeking from the skirt, they created a stir, it was only after people found out they were actually hand carved wooden prosthetic limbs.
Aimee States: “Any kind of a runway walk that I had practiced went out the window. Then suddenly they laced me into this leather bodice, and there were some spinning discs in the floor of the runway, you know . . . was very conscious of how to avoid them. But now that my neck was secured in this almost neck-brace position, I couldn’t look down. I just remember thinking, “Okay, you’ve done the Olympics. You’ve done harder things than this. You can do this. You can survive it.”
