Chanel Autumn Winter 2011 Couture
Karl Lagerfeld continued his dark and decadent theme from Chanel AW11 with the Haute Couture AW11 collection. Inspired by the iconic and deeply disturbing 1927 film classic; Metropolis.
The set was extravagant as ever, with neon-lined streets and a hypnotic black as dark as the abyss. In homage to the mad scientist’s creation in the Metropolis film, on the top of the central pillar stood a robot Coco Chanel.
The collection itself was a focus on Coco Chanel’s life. Her most influential designs collided with the future of time. However Lagerfeld obviously wanted to preserve Coco Chanel’s mystery, through this alluring, enchanting vision.
The colour palette was simply divine, an alluring, almost iniquitous midnight blue was complimented by decadent black and gray. Any white was detailed with black chiffon or beaded detailing to accent this simply gorgeous film noir aesthetic.
Karl Lagerfeld seems to be placing a jaded spotlight on this dark and twisted world with a beautiful, somber seduction.

With all due respect to KL’s achievements, his more recent work is making me worry about Chanel. The designs are nowhere near the density and intricacy that one would expect from Coco’s heirs. On top of the diminishing strength of his designs, Lagerfeld is also harming his own reputation by heavy overexposure in ads for other brands (Volkswagen etc.).
May be that helps him feel well alive and may be he has nowhere to go after Chanel, but it certainly doesn’t help Chanel and is about to devalue his own legacy.
So despite his recent “dark” designs, it would be better not to praise him too loud for it might reinforce his resolve to die in his boots in 31 Rue Cambon.
