Hackney London Riots
The Hackney Riots maybe out of Stylenoir’s normal reporting but to be honest with you the journalist side of me kicked in and begged me to go report the truth, since there was so many distorted hype created on Twitter.
We wanted to find out why society was rebelling and how. Stylenoir was frontline for most of the Hackney Riots and I implore you, listen to us, for this is the truth of what really went down.
All rioters were there solely for their own gain. Forget what you’ve heard, this wasn’t for a cause, this wasn’t for society or even because of social media. This was just pure aggression and monetary gain. We overheard so many rioters conversations “Tottenham aint got nothing on us” one said, another “we’re gunna loot till we drop”. This was backed up by what looked like an 11 year old child running away with a plasma TV at one point, which was possibly the most surreal thing I’ve ever seen.
Secondly, one of the most peculiar thing was the amount of hipster bystanders. Either shocked by the force of the police, or targeted by rioters. We witnessed one hipster’s fixed speed bike being stolen, as he protested “hey man you can’t steal my bike, that’s not on, that’s unfair” his mugger simply looked him dead in the eyes asserted the well known phrase “OR WHAT?” and rode off.
This inspired us to shoot the rest of the images in Instagram format, simply because it really was that ridiculous, fixed bikes and girls in fur coats everywhere, apart from directly near any of the “action”.
If there is one thing we have to commend, it was the police. Especially the riot police. They didn’t take control of the situation on Mere St as well as they could have, but they did very well in the situation.
It is exceptionally difficult for the police to differentiate in that situation between spectators and trouble makers, everyone looks the same. It does annoy us when those critise who were sitting safe at home, do not make judgment unless you’ve experienced the sheer insanity of it. The Police did a fantastic job.
The looting was systematic and beyond control, on three separate occasions we were within 10 feet of shops being ripped apart. Nowhere was safe, from sandwich shops, to jewellery brokers. We kid you not when attacking a Texaco garage one of the girl rioters shouted “Get me a Lucozade”. Yes, the hackney riots were that ridiculous.
Enjoy the photos, comment, share you thoughts, if you were there, share that with us too. We’re hearing rumours Liverpool Street is a target for tonight now (Tuesday), but will update as time goes on

Brilliant. Nice to see hipsters that use others social situations as a spectator sport, stealing snippets of culture and fashion without giving one thought to the difficulties that produce them, finally getting a real taste of life.
I wish people would actually fucking read V for Vendetta before putting on that mask, it’s not about hiding under a mask and committing senseless violence.
-
Very good point. V for vendetta was written in the eighties when the Thatcher government was forcing through some very unpleasant changes on society and without the use of social media anger spontaneously erupted following various injustices. This time it’s kids following the unfettered greed of bankers!
They say the police in some situations are powerless to stop them. Why the fu©k are the spectators not stopping them? Lets not whinge and moan and condemn. Lets beat the living daylights out of these idiots. For every 1 rioter there has to be hundreds of normal citizens. The power to put an immediate end to this is with us. So i say to the good people of london, grab a banister, skateboard or bat and dish out some good old fashioned home style discipline.
-
@Jak, you are more than welcome to head over to Hackney (or maybe Ealing) and show us how to do it. I expect you’ll last 30 seconds before requiring medical treatment. Don’t drop that skateboard, it may be your only chance of escape. I wish people would think before posting such crap. The solution is not a simple …. get real and deal with the causes.

Most of those who go to watch will think that looting is ok (it’s only businesses innit?) and would join in if they had the bottle. Normal citizens have the common sense to stay well away from anything like this.
If people were to “grab a banister, skateboard or bat and dish out some good old fashioned home style discipline.” that would be assault, and just as much against the law as looting and arson.
Great photos. I saw a bit of the rioting in peckham and it was also complete insanity (although I thought it wise to leave quick, I did see youths looting and the hipster by-standers watching!). And, I think your absolutely right that “All rioters were there solely for their own gain” and that these kids aren’t doing it for a cause. But, that does not mean there is not a cause for their behaviour. I mean these selfish kids aren’t ‘created’ in a vacuum. They’ve all probably grown up in London. So the real question is why has society digressed to a point where it is producing aggressive/selfish/stupid kids that think its ok to run around the streets thieving shit! Of course there are many answers to that question, from bad policing to poverty, poor parenting, unemployment, racism etc. All probably have truth to them, but as a bit of a commie I think most of the reasons can be boiled down to one thing; our capitalist dystopia…

The spectators, hipsters see it as either entertainment or they are in some part supportive of the criminals. Either way, there’s not a man among them who would save anyone else. Welcome to Gormless Britain. Manhood is somewhere else, if not reviled outright.
we would all riot, if we all had the balls to do it. Face it who here dosent want to have cheap and free stuff. Its a dog eat dog world.
-
“We..” ??? Speak for yourself. I wouldn’t riot. And I wouldn’t want ‘cheap and free stuff’ that way, tyvm.

Only cheap people want free cheap stuff. Intelligent people aim higher.

[...] Riots in England August 9, 2011 NickMcAvelly Leave a comment Go to comments There has been much hand-wringing and wailing and gnashing of teeth over the past couple of days, most of it utter garbage. One thing is certain: this wasn’t about poverty, not in the material sense. If there’s poverty, it’s spiritual poverty, moral poverty and poverty of ambition. In countries where there’s real deprivation, they have food riots. Here we have flat-screen TV riots. [...] This wasn’t a political protest, or a demonstration against oppression, it was a grotesque manifestation of our shallow, instant gratification, I-want-it-and-I-want-it-now consumerist society, coupled with an extreme explosion of the kind of casual violence which scars our town and city centres across Britain every weekend. – Richard Littlejohn. You spelled Mare street wrong hipster dufus.
The real problem here is those people have clearly absolutely no respect for hard work or anything, otherwise they wouldn’t act like this. Blame their parents or the society or whatever, truth is they’re all children of ignorance and nothingness, it’s not possible to come to an agreement with someone who’s not even able to realize that doing this kind of shit they’re not only damaging the system, they’re damaging themselves in the first place. And they’re not doing it for a valid cause, they’re doing it because it’s cool, they feel strong and they can get stuff for free. That’s the saddest part, actually that’s the scariest part.
didn’t see any hipsters in these pictures, liked the writing though, shame you couldn’t back it up with the pix.
Please contact me on the email given reference to your photos of monday distrubance..

I guess “Mere st” was a mere mistake
Not happy living in Hackney? Leave then. You clearly have no love or clue about the place you are living in. We have enough issues here thank you, don’t need the ‘clueless’ like you, adding to it.
Cheers!
It is spelt ‘Mare Street’ by the way!
Funny, you seem to be making good use of the ‘edgy’ riot pics but sneering about the riot itself….you can’t have it both ways!
