RAD Rad Hourani thumbMontreal based designer Rad Hourani defined androgyny through his minimalist designs in this rad by rad hourani collection. His gender bending, hard edged collection celebrated a sort of goth spirit meets tenebrous militarism. His collection, simply called “#5″, invoked a kind of dystopian futurism.

There were his formulaic minimalist silhouettes this time coming in dark green tones with straight leggings and slender trousers, sculpted wool overcoats with robust lapels, boxy leather backpacks and architectural skirts (for men and women) cut asymmetrically.

Sleek hair both for men and women and almost no make-up merged the collection into a display of carefully selected shapes, materials and details with a definite unisex vibe. Coats and jackets were slightly voluminous, strapped down with harnesses and belts, and paired with leggings and boxy bags.

Details like oversized lapels and subtle geometric inlets added interest. The models seemed otherworldly, dressed in a utilitarian subdued elegance.

Rad Hourani states, “I don’t see why do we need to divide things by cities, gender, seasons, rules, religion, race, nationality, age etc.”

Rad Hourani could be called a master of black – using only a few shades of forest green, cold grey and faded-green khaki he managed to show a huge variety of different tones of black, by using different fabrics and materials.

He explains the break away from the usual shades of black, delving into the green- “Maybe it feels a bit military because of the belts and the green. For me it was the study of the color green and what I felt like wearing. It’s a reflection of the power of existence and nature, the person who wears it is confident. It also reflects where I am today. It’s a pleasure to be invited to Toronto to celebrate my fifth anniversary; the clothes are made in Canada so we’re also celebrating the “made in Canada” production. But it’s just the beginning of the celebration, we’re jumping all over the world – London, New York, Paris, Hong Kong. We’re also coming up with a book and a movie.”

Hourani, who has presided over his label for 5+ years now, executes compelling and consistent concepts, which are directional in nature, highly inventive and represent seriously avant-garde achievement.
